The start-up instructions for the Casio Waveceptor Solar Atomic watch (WV430DJ-1) were the most confusing I have ever experienced. Being a retired engineer, I thought setting up this watch to operate would be a snap but after playing around with it for over an hour I gave up and returned the item. I already have a solar watch (Citizen Eco-Drive) and wanted to try one that automatically adjusted the time the way my cell phone does. I wouldn’t recommend this watch to anyone I wanted to keep as a friend.

I am an engineering programmer. This watch is a challenge. After an hour I still do not have it set to Daylight Savings Time or to English displays. I may never get there. If you are not technology inclined or really like a challenge, this watch and its cousins are probably not for you. This is a very, very frustrating device. Do not be inticed by the solar power/atomic timekeeping features. You may never enjoy them. I can’t get this puppy to recognize PST daylight savings time. Quite a headache.

The setup instructions are very poorly written. It is difficult to read the manual that came with the watch and fully understand how to set the watch to the proper time zone and all of the other settings for alarm, etc that need to be made.
I called the technical support number in the manual and could not understand the person on the line who was suppose to help me.
I am a middle age man who works with computers every day but this was more than I wanted to handle so I returned the watch.

The watch is very poor in usability. After owning it for weeks and reading the manual over and over, I can still not figure out how to change the date to English. It still displays the Kanji for the day and most likely will until I throw it away. The genius that designed it should change jobs and go into encryption technology. Nobody could crack his evil designs. The H-S ET setting is punishment for the user. When you select it and try to make any change, the display flashes -0 0- and never changes even if you hit the watch with a hammer. What is this? I cannot believe that the designers could be so senseless. The watch keeps good time and it looks like it could withstand a nuclear blast. What it lacks in usability it has in brute ruggedness. It looks like a Buick from the 1950s only tougher. My advice is do not buy it unless you know Japanese, which I know a bit. Wait until LG or Samsung offer something better in titanium. The Japanese have totally lost their edge in design. Even my 16-year old straight-A daughter could not figure this watch out. I have 9 years of college education and this watch is just brain rocket surgery to me, not to mention incredibly bulky for my fine arms — I had to remove five links from the bracelet to fit me. It is designed for 300-pound gorillas that cannot read Kanji nor English.

I really like this watch. Set itself over night. At first annoying, but now fun is that it uses japenese symbols for the days of the week before the day of the month. I’ve pretty much got them memorized. If you need the symbols just Google “japenese days of week”.
